Everyone knows that building software products is different from the software services business. It takes a different kind of entrepreneur and a different kind of team to build a successful product software, what I like to call the product software DNA. In a series of 4 posts I am going to share my personal take on what it takes to be a product software company founder. Here’s the second.

 

 

Imagination

Building a software product requires looking far ahead ahead, well beyond the visible road and seeing the unseen in the current. The product software company founders thinks of changing things for the better for potential customers and user. They want to make her life better, her work easier, her time more productive.

There is always room for stuff that is incrementally different, the proverbial better mousetrap, but often the difference between a moderate success and a huge one is the degree of paradigm shift you vision over the present.

Not only do they see a different picture, they are convinced that’s what it’s going to be and they just know that it’s waiting for them to make it happen. Almost anyone can describe today, some can even predict what tomorrow will be like. The latter are what the world calls visionaries. Founders who make tomorrow happen are sometimes visionaries but more often they are the ones who know how today will transform to tomorrow. The ones who are successful have the ideas that help people adopt the new and who can identify and bring the other elements needed to make tomorrow happen.

Even when realise it is politically incorrect and bordering on arrogance to say the customer does not know what she wants, in their hearts and minds they know that to be true. Henry Ford once said, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said, faster horses”.
